Divorce Mediation

Divorce Mediation is different from Collaborative Law. In Divorce Mediation both parties work with a neutral (the "mediator") who assists the parties in coming to an agreement. Because divorce entails a complex array of rights and responsibilities that the parties may not be aware of, it is strongly recommended that each party see a separate attorney prior to their first meeting with the mediator. It is also important for the parties to each have a respective attorney during the mediation process as their advocate, and to provide legal information to assist in their assessment of the terms of marital agreement. As a mediator, Laurie Israel works to preserve a level-playing field, and she makes sure the parties are aware of all their options prior to making decisions and agreements between them. Laurie has a strong background in tax law, real estate law, trusts and probate law, and bankruptcy, all of which can be very helpful in the divorce planning process. Laurie also serves as reviewing counsel for mediations. See her article "10 Secrets for Reviewing Counsel" on the Articles page.
